St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School Achieve Eco-Schools Green Flag Award

At St. Benedict’s Catholic Primary School we are delighted to have achieved our Eco-Schools Green Flag Award with Distinction.  This is the highest level you can receive and is only given to those schools where the Eco-Schools judges believe have gone ‘above and beyond’ the requirements for a Green Flag.  Perhaps our beautiful woodland site makes it easy for us to have nature at the forefront of our minds!

Local Eco Steward Litter Picks:

Our Eco Stewards led a whole school assembly and shared how to keep the areas we live and play in litter free for people and animals.  They introduced an anti-litter competition encouraging children to design an anti-litter poster.

The children of the forest made eco-friendly decorations to sell at our Christmas market. Year R children made reindeers, Year 1 knotted red wool for a Santa surprise and Year 2 drilled holes to string together wobbly Santas.

School Allotment

Year R and Year 3 teamed up to plant vegetables and wild flowers for a bee garden in the allotment as part of Year 3’s ‘Roots and Shoots’ science topic and part of Year R’s Catholic Social Teaching – Stewardship and Participation.

Year 3 Horton Kirby Environment Trip

The judges responded to our submission with a wonderful report outlining everything they loved about our environmental efforts over the last year.  Here are just a few quotes from the report:

  • Your curriculum link examples are impressively extensive and varied, showing your school’s integration of environmental issues across a variety of subjects and year groups.
  • You have created passionate young environmentalists, excited about protecting our planet, and empowered to make a difference.
  • We praise your Eco-Team for their wonderful efforts to keep their school updated about their Eco-Schools’ work.
  • The greatest success of your Eco-Schools’ journey was the fantastic school community and family engagement and commitment to the wide variety of projects you have been able to offer at the school this year and we agree that this is something to be very proud of.
  • You consistently strive to make a positive impact and that’s truly inspiring.
  • Congratulations! Your application truly stood out, and we’re thrilled to award you an Eco-Schools’ Green Flag with Distinction! Keep up the fantastic work next year!

Whilst this is clearly a whole school effort, I’d like to especially thank Mrs Franklin who leads our Eco Steward Team and puts a great deal of thought into our environmental work and also our governor, Mrs Hunt, who has supported us along the way.
