On Thursday 10th October, celebrating the return of the ‘500 Words’ competition, the BBC visited St James the Great in Peckham with two authors: Chris Smith and Greg James. They held an Assembly for Years 3 to 6 to launch the UK’s largest writing competition for children aged 5 to 11.

The event was broadcast on BBC London’s Evening News programme and also Eddie Nestor’s evening radio show where staff and pupils were interviewed. This assembly was a wonderful opportunity for the children to learn more about storytelling and creative writing from Chris Smith, British children’s author and radio newsreader, and Greg James, broadcaster, Radio 1 presenter and children’s author.
